Worcester Fenians 1-10 Cleveland/St. Pats 1-6

It was a wet and windy day in Chicago for day 2 of the USGAA finals. Cleveland won the toss and opted to play against the wind in the first half. Cleveland started strong scoring a goal and a point. Fenians then came into the game with a goal and 2 points from Conor Grene, Shawn Sullivan carried the ball and drew defenders in then handpassing to Grene who finished to the top corner.

With Padraig Smith playing well in a sweeper role, Celeveland found it hard to get scoring opportunities, good work in the defence from Patrick Sullivan, Dylan Walsh and Conor Moynihan put us in a strong position.

Further points from Shawn Sullivan and Gareth McAlinden put us ahead by 1 point at half time.

Half time score:

Worcester Fenians 1-4

Cleveland/St. Pats 1-3

In the second half the Fenians were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over with a point from play from Conor Grene and 2 from play from Shawn Sullivan, each curling over the bar from the left hand side. Cleveland/St. Pats were given an opportunity to get back into the game after being awarded a penalty but the kick was struck over the bar.

Fenians looked destined to win when Cleveland were reduced to 12 men following a red card for a second bookable offence. Shawn Sullivan had a venomous shot with the outside of the boot which struck the post but Cleveland were able to gather the rebound, Clevelands goalkeeper also pulled off a fine save from a Gareth McAlinden effort aimed to the bottom left corner.

Despite holding most of the possession, Fenians were not able to make it a 2 score lead until Mark LaPointe stepped up and slotted a well taken point with little or no time left on the clock.

The warm summer weather was back once again for day 3 of the USGAA Nationals. Charlotte won the toss and opted to play with the aid of the breeze in the first half. Charlotte started strong scoring a goal and a point. Fenians responded well with a point on the run from Gareth McAlinden.

Shawn Sullivan kept a ball alive near the goal line using his feet to cross a ball to Patrick Heffernan who fired in a goal to the top corner. Another Gareth McAlinden score from play put the Fenians in an early lead. This would unfortunately be as good as it got for the Fenians, Charlotte responded with 2 goals and a number of well taken points.

Fenians kept a foothold in the game with points from play from Conor Grene and Liam Kelly, but Charlotte were able to respond with points also. Fenians finished the half with 2 frees from Conor Grene.

Half time score:

Worcester Fenians 1-6

Charlotte GAA  3-6

Fenians with the wind in the second half had hoped for a strong start, however it was Charlotte who scored a goal and a point. Some near misses put the Fenians in a tough position chasing a big Charlotte lead.

Fenians did manage to get a goal and a point from Conor Grene, but some late Charlotte points put the game beyond reach.

Fenians continued to push for goals and did force the Charlotte goalkeeper into some magnificent saves, ultimately it was Charlotte who took home the championship trophy. Credit to our guys, many of whom played 4 games over the course of a fantastic weekend.
